Where have all the leaders gone?
Not just those who inspire hope
But those who teach us connection
Those who teach us to cope
We feel as though we’re thrust
Into the fastest race
To discern who’s stronger or better
Without being told the pace
Everyone is on their own
If they have a leg up or down
Everyone is on their own
Even if they begin to drown
There are few who will help another
Unless it’s also to help themself
It’s easier to forget kindness
Than to put our ego on a shelf
What happened to community?
A good sense between right and wrong?
What happened to having shared goals,
And a sense that we belong?
To this earth, to one another
To work together and lighten the load
Of our neighbors, our friends, our colleagues
Living by a similar code
Yes, things can divide us
We can allow them to tear us apart
We can continue to be foolish
Or we can choose to be smart
Community is so much more
Than being in the same place
Community isn’t just behaving the same
Or coming from the same race
Community is so much more than that
It’s a fellowship, a home
A place to feel loved and whole,
Like you’re no longer alone
Community is a frame of mind
A way to shape your heart
And open it to others
Vulnerability is just the start
Kindness, trust and love
That’s all we really need
And in a good community
We’ll finally all be freed
