Persons/Full of Life

She's not just a woman

She's not just a friend

Why do we have to label her

To try and understand

that she's a person

a living, breathing human full of life

She's not just a sister

Or someone's girlfriend

No explanation should be needed

To lend a helping hand

Cuz' she's a person

More than just a mother and a wife

But history has taught us well

Her value is low unless one can tell

She's devoted to everyone else but herself

Though she's a person

She is she

She is me

He's not just a man

Not just a security guard

Why do we have to label him

And make things so hard

When he's a person

A living, breathing human full of life

But history has made it feel true

He's only valued if he's stronger than you

Pushes all that he loves to the side to pursue

Though he's a person

He is he

He is me

All these labels, these words we talk

Don't really guide us as we try to walk

Through our lives

In disguise

Rarely ever feeling wise

Cuz' we're lost

We are just persons

They're not just a colleague

A neighbor or a friend

They are not just a partner

For someone to depend on

They are a person

A living, breathing human full of life

But our predecessors made a choice

To exclude their values, their lives, and their voices

So let's let go of the anger, and simply rejoice

That they're a person

Cuz' they are we

They are me
