The Explosion or the Glue

Can differences bring people together?
Or will it eventually split them apart?
How hard should one work on a relationship,
Before it’s time to make a new start?
When you worship different gods or truths
Is there really such a place as middle ground?
How do you meet there so you both feel free
And not restricted or uncomfortably bound
There are so many truths out there
it seems impossible to understand
That there is no one right or one wrong answer
Not without experiencing it firsthand
Because what’s right for you may be great
But it may not be right for me
And how dare you make me feel wrong or stupid
Just because we disagree
To work to understand another's beliefs or choices
Is an act of faith that’s true
It goes above and beyond just respecting them
And then ignoring what they do
To work to empathize another’s plight and feelings
With which they may struggle every day
Is an act of love that speaks volumes
And helps them make sense of the grey
It’s up to the individuals involved in the relationship
To make the differences a strength
Instead of making them a weakness
To cut amity or love at any length
It’s up to the individuals to work together
To form and bond as one team
If they can manage even just that
Then they can pull ahead, full steam
Respect and understanding helps,
But it’s faith and love that’s true
That will be the deciding factor to make
the differences the explosion or the glue
Everything we are and build
And everything we do
Has cracks and flaws, but we must decide
If we’re the explosion or the glue
